All About Kevin Bacon’s Father, Edmund Bacon

Born in 1910, Edmund Bacon grew up in an era influenced by the tail end of the Victorian period and his family’s Quaker values. He emerged as a witty and brilliant urban planner, dedicating the first half of the 20th century to transforming Philadelphia and other American cities, and the latter half to defending his achievements.

Many elements of his initial thesis, which was a plan for a new civic center in Philadelphia, were realized long after he graduated from Cornell University with a degree in architecture in 1932. Before his role as a city planner in Flint, Michigan, Edmund worked as an architect in both China and Philadelphia. Later, in the 1970s and 1980s, he made significant contributions as a City Planning Commissioner and taught urban design at the University of Pennsylvania.

When asked about his greatest accomplishment, Bacon famously responded, “Philadelphia.”
