CHICO, Calif. – A colossal wildfire that is engulfing residences and neighborhoods just outside Chico, California, continues to expand in size Friday as firefighters strive to control the flames and law enforcement examines a suspected arsonist accused of igniting the blaze in a peculiar incident.

The Park Fire ignited in Bidwell Park shortly before 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday. It rapidly grew to almost 6,500 acres by Wednesday night, as local authorities rushed to evacuate endangered residents to safety, as reported by CAL Fire in Butte County. The blaze has now expanded to nearly 165,000 acres and has decimated 134 residences, as per fire authorities. CAL FIRE Butte County Fire Chief Garret Sjolund stated, “The fire swiftly surpassed our resources due to the arid fuels, scorching temperatures, low humidities, and the wind.”

Fire officials indicated that “various” houses have been ruined, but it is premature to obtain an exact tally. They have tended to two firefighters for minor injuries thus far.

A flaming residence erupted into a ball of flames as firefighters and journalists observed the inferno on Wednesday evening.

Another eerie occurrence unfolded on Thursday when a twirling fire whirlwind was captured on tower cameras monitoring the fire’s progression.

Over 4,000 residents, including a few hundred in Chico, have been evacuated, as confirmed by Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea.

Firefighters will now confront even more formidable weather conditions as Fire Weather Warnings have been activated for the area, introducing gusty winds to the scorching and dry environment that has persisted for weeks.

On the other hand, a 42-year-old man is currently detained in the Butte County Jail, under suspicion of igniting the fire. Eyewitnesses noticed a man beside a vehicle where a fire had ignited beneath the left wheel of what was revealed to be the suspect’s mother’s car, and saw it engulf in flames, as per Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey.

“The witness thought his behavior was somewhat peculiar and that he was only observing the fire,” Ramsey stated during a news briefing on Thursday evening.

Ramsey mentioned that the man entered the automobile for a brief period, then exited and nudged the blazing car down a 60-foot slope into a gully, where it eventually consumed, dispersing flames into the adjacent brush.

Subsequently, the wildfire surged, prompting urgent evacuations.
