New Delhi:

A single soldier was slain in combat while another was wounded during a skirmish with militants along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district today.

In an official statement, the Army mentioned that a “Pakistani infiltrator” also perished in the clash.

Two soldiers sustained severe injuries in the gunfight and were transferred to the Base Hospital in Srinagar. The Army conveyed that one of the soldiers succumbed to his injuries while the other is recuperating well from treatment and is in a stable condition.

“Previously, comparable incursions by infiltrators, actively supported and encouraged by the Pakistani Army, have leveraged dense vegetation and poor visibility conditions but have always, as today, been effectively thwarted and disrupted. The Indian Army is resolute in its determination and dedication to uphold the sanctity of the Line of Control and thwart the malicious and hostile intentions of the Pakistan Army,” the statement declared.

Army insiders suggested that the assault appears to have been abetted by Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT), which was implicated in multiple such operations before the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan in February 2021.

“This is a provocative action and undeniably an escalation along the LOC,” remarked a senior officer.

The assault occurred a day following Kargil Vijay Diwas, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a stern caution to Pakistan and stated that the Indian Army would conquer every terrorism challenge.

Earlier this week, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi had toured the same vicinity of the LoC and evaluated the readiness of the forces to handle infiltration and terrorist assaults.

Amid escalating terrorism incidents, PM Modi presided over a review session to evaluate the scenario in Jammu and Kashmir last month. He conversed with Home Minister Amit Shah and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and was provided with a comprehensive overview of the security-related scenario of the Union Territory and the counter-terrorism activities being executed by the armed forces.

He also conversed with Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha and received a briefing on the endeavors being undertaken by the local administration.

The Prime Minister has urged the authorities to deploy the complete range of the armed forces’ counter-terrorism capabilities.
