Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 Expected to Bring Significant Improvement in GPU Power Efficiency, with Slight CPU Enhancements

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset is set to become Qualcomm’s next-generation top-tier mobile platform upon its release in October. Prior to the launch, numerous reports have highlighted the potential enhancements the chipset may receive. A recent leak suggests that the chip could deliver significant efficiency in terms of GPU power, although its CPU performance may not meet consumer expectations. Notably, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset is reportedly constructed using a 3nm process technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC Indicated to Lack Significant CPU Performance

In a publication on X (previously known as Twitter), a leaker who goes by the handle @negativeonehero shared a screenshot of a Weibo post from a Chinese informant. Summarizing the informant’s details, the X user stated, “After reviewing the internal testing data of 8G4, the CPU efficiency enhancement is in the single digits, while the GPU enhancement is substantial, with the possibility of D9300 peaking at half the power.”

The informant claimed to have access to the internal benchmark and power usage data of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. According to this information, the Adreno 750 GPU, expected to be included in the SoC, is poised for a significant improvement. The informant suggests that it could deliver comparable GPU performance to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 chipset with half the power consumption.

Nevertheless, there is a drawback. According to the informant, the CPU performance of the chipset is lackluster, showing only a single-digit enhancement compared to its predecessor. However, the publication does not provide any benchmark figures showcasing the improvement. Therefore, it seems that the chipset may prioritize GPU efficiency over CPU performance.

It is important to note that these are merely speculations, and since the information has not been officially confirmed, it should be viewed with skepticism. The manufacturer has only announced that the upcoming top-tier mobile platform will utilize its proprietary Oryon CPU and will incorporate a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU). Additional details will be revealed once Snapdragon officially unveils the 8 Gen 4 chipset at its October event.
