An official mentioned that the woman has been residing in India for the past 10 years

The US woman who was discovered fastened to a tree with an iron chain in a woodland in Maharashtra’s Sindhudurg district is unable to provide her statement to the authorities due to her frail condition and lack of food intake for a couple of days, officials stated on Monday.
She has been recognized as Lalita Kayi Kumar, 50, and was located chained in Sonurli village, about 450 kilometers from the state capital Mumbai on Saturday, after a shepherd heard her shouts and informed the police.
A duplicate of her US passport as well as other papers, including an Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address, was found with her.
“The woman is not capable of providing her statement. She is feeble due to lack of food intake for a couple of days and also because of heavy rains in the area,” an official stated.
Initially, she was taken to a hospital in Sawantwadi in the Konkan region and later to Oros in Sindhudurg.
“Considering her mental and health condition, she was transferred to Goa Medical College for advanced treatment. She is now in a stable condition. Doctors treating her mentioned that she suffers from psychiatric issues. We have discovered medical prescriptions in her possession,” the official stated.
Spouse Responsible For The Act?
The official mentioned that they are unsure for how long she was fastened to that tree and they suspect that her husband, who comes from Tamil Nadu, shackled her there.
“We came across her Aadhaar card with a Tamil Nadu address and a copy of her US passport. Her visa has expired. We are in the process of verifying all these documents to confirm her nationality. The police are also in contact with the Foreigners Regional Registration office,” the official said.
According to preliminary information gathered by the police, the woman has been residing in India for the past 10 years, the official mentioned.
The official stated that police squads have been dispatched to Tamil Nadu, Goa, and other locations to locate her relatives as part of the investigation.
