Simone Biles claims gold and Suni Lee secures bronze in women’s gymnastics all-around event
Simone Biles secured the top spot in Paris during the women’s gymnastics individual all-around on Thursday after the letdown of Tokyo, while fellow American Suni Lee claimed bronze. This marks the third instance the U.S. has garnered two medalists on the same podium and the sixth consecutive time Team USA has clinched gold in this event.
Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade clinched the silver. She had been leading in the competition until Biles encountered difficulties on the uneven bars in the second rotation. However, a stellar beam routine propelled Biles back into the lead, ultimately securing her victory on the floor.
Lee required a stellar performance on the floor to secure her comeback bronze.
Biles, who prevailed in the individual all-around in Rio in 2016, and Lee, who secured the individual title in Tokyo in 2021, were the first former all-around champions to compete in an Olympic individual all-around event.
