Kumar Sangakkara Awaits Communication From ECB Regarding Coaching Opportunity with England

Kumar Sangakkara expressed his interest in potentially coaching England in the shorter formats of the game, describing it as a “thrilling opportunity.” However, he clarified that he has not been formally approached for the position yet. The England and Wales Cricket Board are currently in search of a new leader for their limited-overs team after parting ways with Matthew Mott, who oversaw disappointing performances in the 2023 50-over World Cup and the recent T20 World Cup. Former English cricketer Marcus Trescothick will take charge temporarily for the upcoming one-day international and T20 series against Australia, while Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, looks for a permanent replacement for Mott.

The possibility of Sangakkara taking on the role has been discussed, partly due to his experience working with England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler at the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

However, the 46-year-old former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman remained tight-lipped on the matter when asked on Friday.

“I have heard my name being mentioned, but no formal approach has been made,” Sangakkara, who is also a member of Sky Sports’ commentary team for The Hundred, told Britain’s PA news agency.

“The England white-ball coaching position is an enticing opportunity for anyone, but there are numerous qualified candidates. Matthew Mott has done a commendable job.

“It’s great to see Jos Buttler continuing in his leadership role as the team evolves. The decision making within the England setup has been commendable. I appreciate the leadership of Rob Key, who has shown great foresight in setting the vision for England cricket.”

Reflecting on his current commitments, Sangakkara, who is the first non-British president of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), shared, “I am content at the moment. My experience with the Rajasthan Royals has been rewarding and enjoyable over the past four years.”

Additionally, Sangakkara expressed his delight in seeing fellow Sri Lankan cricketer Chamari Athapaththu competing for the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred after leading the Sri Lankan women’s team to victory in the Asia Cup last week.

“While I am pleased to see Ben Stokes playing, I am particularly excited about Chamari Athapaththu’s participation as she has been an exceptional leader and captain for Sri Lanka in global cricket,” Sangakkara remarked.
