One deputy killed, two wounded in ambush shooting
Three Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were fired upon, with one fatally shot, as they were attending to a report of disturbance at a Florida residence.
One deputy has passed away. Another deputy was hit in the shoulder and is currently in stable condition. The third deputy was struck multiple times in the armpit, groin, and stomach, underwent surgery, and is now in a critical condition, as per Lake County Sheriff Peyton Grinnell during a briefing.
Authorities reacted to a call regarding an ongoing disturbance. While they were investigating, they discovered an issue at a nearby residence, Grinnell stated.
The deputies then proceeded there and witnessed what seemed to be the rear door forcefully opened. They detected a commotion inside the residence. Upon entering, the deputies faced “a lot of gunfire,” resulting in one deputy getting hit, according to Grinnell.
The accompanying deputy was able to exit the residence, but the first deputy was trapped inside.
Multiple deputies arrived at the scene and formed a “rescue team” to re-enter the house and try to retrieve the trapped deputy. They encountered a “hail of gunfire,” resulting in another deputy sheriff getting hit, but they managed to withdraw from the residence, according to Grinnell.
“It was an extremely violent situation,” Grinnell remarked.
“They were unexpectedly attacked,” he stated.
