Rahul Dravid, the former captain and leader of the Indian team, discussed his elation during the moment of raising the ICC T20 World Cup this year in his final coaching role with the Men in Blue, stating that his jubilant, lively celebrations were simply a release of “happiness and relief”. When India claimed the Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, their first senior ICC championship in 11 years, on 29 June, the typically reserved Rahul Dravid joined in the festivities and erupted with joy after being called on stage by the players.
Reflecting on the event, Dravid shared that it was a spontaneous reaction driven by his happiness for his players and the supporting staff.
“It just happens. You don’t plan these things,” Dravid expressed during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) conversation with Star Sports as cited by ICC.
“You don’t contemplate these things. Most times, I attempt to control my emotions as a coach. It’s expected of you. Honestly, I was genuinely happy for the team. I was delighted for all the boys, for the support staff, and the many individuals who had put in hard work alongside me,” he added.
Dravid mentioned that above all, it was a sense of relief following India’s triumph, following their recent close calls in the ICC competitions. In 2023 alone, India reached the finals of two senior Men’s ICC events, the World Test Championship final and the Cricket World Cup, but were defeated by Australia on both occasions.
“Not just in that tournament. I had been there for two and a half to three years. And we had come close numerous times: the semi-finals of the previous T20 World Cup in Australia [in 2022], the finals of the World Test Championship, and the 50-over World Cup in India,” Dravid stated.
“And we just couldn’t get over the line at the crucial moment. We were playing excellent cricket, going from strength to strength. But even in those instances, you need a bit of luck, a bit of fate to go your way and I believe that was on our side. In some other tournaments, unfortunately, luck was not on our side. A lot of that was just a release of happiness and relief,” he concluded.
Prior to his role as the India coach, Rahul Dravid had also secured the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2018 as the head coach of India U19s.
