NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss Opens Up About Cancer Battle and Recovery
Legendary NFL wide receiver and Hall of Famer Randy Moss has revealed that he is battling cancer and is currently recovering from major surgery. Moss, known for his iconic career in professional football, shared the news during an Instagram Live session, where he introduced himself as a cancer survivor and expressed gratitude to his “prayer warriors” for their support.
Moss explained that doctors discovered a cancerous mass in his bile duct, located between his pancreas and liver. On Thanksgiving, he underwent a procedure to place a stent in his liver. About a week ago, he had a six-hour Whipple procedure, a complex surgery that involved removing part of his pancreas, small intestine, gallbladder, and bile duct. Moss was hospitalized for six days following the operation and was discharged on Friday.
“I didn’t think I’d ever be in this position, as healthy as I thought I was,” the 47-year-old said. Despite the challenges, Moss remains optimistic and says he’s ready to tackle the next phase of his treatment, which will include chemotherapy and radiation.
During the live session, Moss, wearing a hoodie that read “Team Moss,” thanked everyone who has supported him and his family during this difficult time. “All the prayers, the well wishes—I really felt that, and my family felt that,” he shared.
Moss has temporarily stepped back from his role as an analyst on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown to focus on his health. However, he made it clear that his goal is to return to the studio as soon as he’s well enough. “As soon as I get healthy to get back out with the guys, I will be on set. Hopefully, I can be with you guys soon,” he said.
In addition to sharing his personal journey, Moss is using his platform to make a difference. He’s asking for donations through his website, with proceeds going toward cancer research.
Randy Moss, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018, is widely regarded as one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. Over his 14-season career, he played for the Minnesota Vikings, Oakland Raiders, New England Patriots, Tennessee Titans, and San Francisco 49ers. He ranks second in NFL history with 156 touchdown catches and holds the single-season record for touchdown receptions, with 23 in 2007 as a member of the Patriots.
Moss’s courage and determination during this challenging time serve as an inspiration to his fans and the entire football community.
