Former IIT student and developer of cryogenic engines appointed as head of ISRO
Introducing V Narayanan: The New Chief of ISRO
Rocket scientist V Narayanan is all set to take over as the new chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on January 14, succeeding S Somanath. The announcement of his elevation was made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, marking a significant milestone in his illustrious career.
Academic and Professional Journey
Mr. Narayanan completed his M Tech in Cryogenic Engineering and PhD in Aerospace Engineering from IIT Kharagpur, where he excelled and was awarded a Silver Medal for securing the first rank in the M Tech program. His expertise and passion for rocket and spacecraft propulsion led him to join ISRO in 1984, where he steadily climbed the ranks.
His early work at Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) involved contributions to the Solid Propulsion area of Sounding Rockets, Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV), and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). Notably, Mr. Narayanan played a crucial role in India’s development of the cryogenic engine, a technology that was initially denied to the country.
Over the years, he has made significant contributions to various projects, including process planning, control, and realization of Ablative nozzle systems, composite motor cases, and composite Igniter cases. His leadership in the Failure Analysis Committee for Chandrayaan 2, which led to the successful Chandrayaan 3 mission, exemplifies his problem-solving skills and dedication to ISRO’s missions.
Current Roles and Responsibilities
Currently serving as the head of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC) in Kerala’s Valiamala since 2018, Mr. Narayanan oversees the development of liquid, semi-cryogenic, and cryogenic propulsion stages for launch vehicles. He also leads the development of chemical and electric propulsion systems for satellites and control systems for launch vehicles.
As a distinguished scientist (APEX Scale) and the seniormost director in ISRO, Mr. Narayanan holds key positions such as Chairman of the Project Management Council-Space Transportation System (PMC-STS) and Chairman of the National Level Human Rated Certification Board (HRCB) for Gaganyaan, India’s planned human spaceflight mission.
During his upcoming two-year tenure as the ISRO chief, he will also serve as the Chairman of the Space Commission, overseeing strategic decisions and initiatives in the space sector.
Future Endeavors
Excited about his new role, Mr. Narayanan expressed his vision for ISRO, stating, “We have a clear roadmap for India, and I hope to take ISRO to greater heights as we have great talent.” With his expertise, experience, and leadership, the Indian space program is poised for remarkable advancements under his guidance.
