An 18-year-old migrant girl was sexually assaulted in a moving autorickshaw near Chennai late on Monday night. The incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of women in the city.
The Assault
The woman was waiting for a bus outside the Kilambakkam bus terminus near Chennai when an auto-rickshaw driver offered her a ride. When she refused, he forcefully dragged her inside. Two more men joined the driver, and they sexually assaulted her at knifepoint while the auto-rickshaw was in motion.
Rescue Operation
The woman’s screams caught the attention of passers-by who alerted the police. A team of officers immediately started chasing the vehicle. The assailants managed to drop off the survivor on the roadside and fled the scene. A bystander, who happened to be a police officer, offered assistance, and the police team successfully rescued the girl. The survivor, who hails from another state and works in Salem, was deeply traumatized by the incident.

This incident comes just a month after a sexual assault on the campus of Anna University that sparked a massive political controversy. Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai criticized the DMK government led by MK Stalin for failing to address the rising cases of sexual assault in the state.
Mr. Annamalai expressed his concern about the increasing accessibility of drugs in Tamil Nadu and questioned the government’s effectiveness in tackling the issue. He highlighted the significant decline in arrests made in NDPS cases in recent years, despite the rise in drug-related crimes.
