Historical Achievement by Indian Navy Women Officers

In a groundbreaking achievement, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, aboard INSV Tarini, made history by crossing Cape Horn, located at the southern tip of South America, on Saturday. This remarkable feat took place while the two sailors were sailing on the third leg of the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition, as announced by the Indian Navy.

Navigating through Treacherous Waters

The passage through Cape Horn required the officers to traverse the Drake Passage, a waterway named after the English explorer Sir Francis Drake. This route is known for its extreme winds, towering waves, and unpredictable weather conditions, making it a treacherous journey for sailors. Despite the challenges, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A successfully crossed Cape Horn, marking a significant achievement in their naval careers.

Earning the Title of “Cape Horners”

By conquering Cape Horn under sail, the two officers have earned themselves the prestigious title of “Cape Horners.” This designation is traditionally bestowed upon elite seafarers who have successfully navigated the treacherous waters of Cape Horn, showcasing exceptional skill and resilience in the face of adversity.

Chief of Naval Staff’s Flag-off Ceremony

Last year, Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff of India, flagged off INSV Tarini for the Navika Sagar Parikrama II expedition at Ocean Sailing Node, INS Mandovi, Goa. This historic global circumnavigation, led by two women Naval Officers, Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, is set to cover four continents, three Oceans, and three challenging Capes in a span of 240 days, covering 23,400 nautical miles.
