In her comments on X, people pointed to India’s performance under Sharma’s leadership, highlighting his nickname “Hitman” for his exceptional batting skills in defense of the cricketer.

Outrage on Social Media

As the debate escalated, the BJP questioned the Congress’s patriotism, leading to Ms. Mohamed deleting her posts. The Congress has distanced itself from her remarks, stating that they do not align with the party’s stance. Pawan Khera, chairman of the party’s publicity department, confirmed that Ms. Mohamed was instructed to remove the social media posts and exercise caution in the future.

Congress Clarification

In response to the controversy, Pawan Khera posted on Twitter, emphasizing the party’s respect for sporting icons and disapproval of any statements undermining their legacy. Ms. Mohamed later compared Sharma to former captain Virat Kohli, stating that Kohli always compliments other cricketers and defending her right to express opinions in a democracy.

Rohit Sharma, aged 37, assumed the role of Team India captain in 2023. Under his leadership, India secured the T20 World Cup in the previous year and clinched two Asia Cup trophies. Sharma has also excelled in the IPL, guiding the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles as captain.
