Rock Paintings and Inscriptions: Uncovering the Treasure Trove in the Depths of Andhra Forest
Ancient Inscriptions and Rock Art Discovered in Andhra Pradesh
In a groundbreaking archaeological find, ancient inscriptions dating back 800 to 2000 years have been unearthed at Kadapa’s Lankkamala Reserve Forest in Andhra Pradesh. This discovery is being hailed as one of the most significant in recent times, shedding new light on the region’s rich history.
Discovery of Rock Shelters and Prehistoric Paintings
During a survey conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India, three rock shelters were discovered at the site. One of these shelters contained remarkable prehistoric paintings depicting animals, geometric patterns, and human figures. These paintings, believed to be from the Megalithic and early historic periods, were created using natural materials like red ochre, kaolin, animal fat, and crushed bones.
Insights from Rock Inscriptions
The rock inscriptions found at Lankkamala Reserve Forest date between the 4th and 16th centuries CE. These inscriptions suggest that the site was once a major Shaivite pilgrim center that attracted devotees from North India. The scripts of the inscriptions varied, including Brahmi, Shell, Nagari (Sanskrit), and Telugu characters, providing valuable insights into the religious and cultural practices of the region.
Survey Expedition and Significance of the Findings
The survey, which took place between February 27 and March 1, covered nearly 30 inscriptions in the rugged terrain of Nityapujakona, Akkadevatala Konda, and Bandigani Chella, located south of Srisailam. Led by K Munirathnam, the survey team embarked on a challenging trek through steep hills and dense forests to document the inscriptions.
Describing the significance of the findings, Munirathnam emphasized that this discovery is a landmark in the ASI’s history. The inscriptions provide valuable clues about pilgrimage routes and the shifting religious landscape of the region from the 4th century onwards. The discoveries also offer insights into the region’s past, enriching our understanding of its history, culture, and traditions.
Overall, the discovery of ancient inscriptions and rock art at Lankkamala Reserve Forest in Andhra Pradesh is a testament to the rich heritage of the region and the importance of preserving and studying its archaeological treasures for future generations.
