Assam Chief Minister Honors Ratan Tata with Naming of Electronic City
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the upcoming Electronic City in Jagi road, set to host India’s first semiconductor plant, will be named after the late industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting to honor Mr. Tata, who passed away on October 9, 2024.
Recognition of Ratan Tata’s Contribution
Mr. Sarma highlighted the significant impact of Ratan Tata’s decision to establish the semiconductor plant in Assam. He described it as a game changer and credited Mr. Tata for attracting interest and investments from other top industrialists to the region. The state cabinet decided to name the entire area covering the semiconductor plant, electronic park, and proposed Electronic City township as Ratan Tata Electronic City.
Northeast’s First Electronic City
The upcoming Electronic City will be the first of its kind in the Northeast, focusing on semiconductors and advanced electronics. This development is expected to position Assam as a major semiconductor hub, thanks to the groundbreaking investment by the Tata Group.
Ratan Tata’s Legacy in Assam
Ratan Tata had a longstanding association with Assam, with the Tata Group making early investments in the tea industry in the region. The recent Rs 27,000 crore chip assembly plant marked a significant milestone in Assam’s industrial growth. In 2022, Mr. Tata was honored with the Assam Baibhav, the state’s highest civilian award, for his contributions to the state’s development.
Contribution to Cancer Care
In addition to his industrial ventures, Ratan Tata also made significant contributions to cancer care in Assam. He envisioned projects to provide support to cancer patients, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds who could not afford expensive treatments. His efforts in this area have left a lasting impact on the healthcare landscape of Assam.
The Naming of Ratan Tata Electronic City stands as a tribute to the remarkable legacy of an individual who played a pivotal role in shaping Assam’s industrial and social development. It serves as a reminder of the enduring impact that visionary leaders like Ratan Tata can have on the communities they serve.
