Tragic Loss: The Vivienne, Winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, Passes Away at 32

The drag community is mourning the loss of James Lee Williams, known professionally as The Vivienne, who has died at the age of 32. The announcement was made by his public relations representative on Sunday, leaving fans and friends heartbroken.

Simon Jones shared the news on Instagram, stating, “It is with immense sadness that we let you know our beloved James Lee Williams – The Vivienne, has passed this weekend. James was an incredibly loved, warm-hearted, and amazing person. Their family is heartbroken at the loss of their son, brother, and uncle. They are so proud of the wonderful things James achieved in their life and career.” The family has requested privacy as they process this loss.

The Vivienne first gained prominence as the UK drag ambassador for the US series RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2015. He rose to fame after winning the inaugural UK series of the show in 2019 with a memorable final performance to Wham!’s “I’m Your Man.” Following this success, he participated in the seventh season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars and was a finalist in the 2023 UK series of Dancing on Ice, finishing in third place.

Recently, The Vivienne starred as the Childcatcher in the touring production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and previously took on the role of the Wicked Witch of the West in a revival of the Wizard of Oz musical. His film credits also include a role in Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie, while his television appearances featured spots on shows like Emmerdale and The Vivienne Takes on Hollywood.

Tributes have poured in from friends, colleagues, and fans on social media. RuPaul’s Drag Race judge Michelle Visage expressed her heartbreak, stating, “My darling @thevivienne_ we go back to when I started coming over here to the UK. You were always there, always laughing, always giving.” Coronation Street star Antony Cotton described the news as “unbelievably sad,” noting Williams’s joyful spirit.

Emmerdale actor Lisa Riley paid her respects by calling Williams an “incredible human” and emphasized that he will be missed dearly. ITV presenter Lorraine Kelly shared her thoughts, describing him as “such a lovely, funny, whip-smart and generous person.”

Williams, who was born in north Wales, made a mark in the drag scene not only as a performer but also as a mentor and inspiration to many. His unique drag style was characterized as a mix of high fashion and humor, famously stating in an interview, “Comedy is definitely my trump card.”

The loss of The Vivienne represents a significant blow to the British drag community, with RuPaul’s Drag Race UK vs The World winner Tia Kofi mourning the loss, stating, “This is an incredible loss to the British drag community and to the world. Viv represented UK drag at its absolute finest.”

In January of this year, Williams was the victim of a hate crime, where he was assaulted in a homophobic attack. After the incident, he remained resilient, showcasing his strength and determination to continue thriving in the drag world.

The Vivienne’s remarkable contributions to the drag scene and the warmth he spread will be remembered by fans and the community alike.
