FISHERS, Ind. (WISH) – A ten-12 months-outdated boy from Fishers is on a mission to assist the homeless throughout Indiana. Last week, Maddox O’Connor requested police to assist hand out 200 blessing bags. Now, he has a good larger purpose of donating 3,000 bags stuffed with meals, hygiene merchandise and a handwritten notice to individuals in want, by the finish of the 12 months.

It seems Maddox has been on this mission for the previous few years and the most inspiring half is that his compassion was born from his personal well being struggles.

“It is the best thing I have ever done,” mentioned Maddox. “It just makes me happy.”

He is just pleased to assist. It has been his favourite pastime for the previous few years. This all began when Maddox was 6-years-outdated and he had to go to Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health typically.

“He is a child who happens to have a fatal illness, but he is not a fatal illness. And I think that kind of pulled on his heart because he knows what it is like to struggle for even the basic things,” mentioned Maddox’s mother, Shawn O’Connor.

Maddox suffers from a uncommon type of muscular dystrophy referred to as mitochondrial illness. He was going to remedy at Riley Hospital for Children when he began giving some homeless individuals close by, his lunch.

“He said ‘thank you’ and I said ‘God bless.’ And that’s how it all started,” mentioned Maddox.

“He looked at me and said ‘I know what it is like to live in a world that I didn’t ask to live in.’ They just need love,” mentioned Shawn.

It’s a particular form of love that sparked a ardour and motivated Maddox’s Mission.

Initially, Maddox needed to make one million bags, however the household settled on a purpose of 500 bags each three months. Now, he palms them out to homeless camps and shelters on Thursdays. Maddox even requested the Fishers Police Department to become involved.

“If they see someone in need, they can hand them out,” mentioned Maddox.

So far this 12 months, he has given away 800 or 900 bags. The 2021 purpose is 3,000.

“He has done more to show love and compassion and kindness in his little 10 years of life than most people can in an entire lifetime,” mentioned Shawn.

“They can make a difference in the world,” mentioned Maddox. “They are loved and they can really make a difference in the world.”
