Ex-Baroda Coach Criticizes Hardik Pandya for Domestic Cricket Absence
India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is facing a challenging period in both his personal and professional life. Recently, his wife, Natasa Stankovic, announced their separation on social media. Adding to his woes, Suryakumar Yadav has replaced him as India’s T20I captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar and new head coach Gautam Gambhir, has expressed concerns over Pandya’s fitness and is seeking a long-term captain for the team.
In a surprising move, Pandya will play for his home team Baroda in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy as the BCCI wants to assess his fitness in the ODI format. This marks his return to domestic cricket after last representing Baroda in 2018.
Pandya has often faced criticism for his frequent absence from domestic cricket. Former Baroda coach Dav Whatmore recently criticized him for not prioritizing his state team. Speaking on Pak Passion’s YouTube channel, Whatmore said, “It always amuses me that he’s termed as the all-rounder from Baroda but he hasn’t played for Baroda for years!”
Whatmore also noted the BCCI’s recent efforts to ensure players participate in domestic formats like the Ranji Trophy, stressing the importance of maintaining a balance across all formats of cricket.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized Pandya’s significance to the team, citing his unique skills. “Hardik is still a very important player for us because his skill sets are very difficult to find. Fitness has been a challenge for him, making it difficult for selectors and coaches when choosing a captain,” said Agarkar. With more time until the next T20 World Cup, the selection committee hopes to explore various options.
As Hardik Pandya prepares to return to domestic cricket, fans and selectors alike will be closely monitoring his performance and fitness in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy.
