Indian men’s hockey team player Amit Rohidas received a one-game suspension after being given a red card in the Paris Olympics 2024 quarterfinal match against Great Britain on Sunday. Consequently, he will be absent for India’s semifinal clash on Tuesday. In the second quarter of the game against Great Britain, Rohidas was advancing in the midfield when his stick collided with an opposing player, leading to a red card from the on-field referee. Despite playing most of the match with only 10 players, India managed to secure victory in the shootout, with PR Sreejesh standing out as their top performer.
Previously, Hockey India expressed concerns about the umpiring standards and decision-making process.
Highlighted concerns included:
1. Inconsistent video umpire reviews, especially in relation to the red card decision for an Indian player, which has diminished confidence in the video review system.
2. Coaching of a goalkeeper from behind the goalpost during the shootout.
3. Use of a video tablet by a goalkeeper during the shootout.
“These incidents have shaken trust in the officiating process among players, coaches, and fans. Hockey India demands a comprehensive review of these issues to maintain the integrity of the sport and ensure fair play in future matches,” stated the official release from Hockey India.
Turning to the match, India delivered a resilient performance to secure victory in the shootout.
Harmanpreet Singh gave India the lead in the 22nd minute, but Lee Morton equalized just five minutes later. The red card did pose a challenge for India, but they managed to keep the opponents at bay with Sreejesh making a couple of remarkable saves. In the shootout, India capitalized on all their opportunities and prevented England from scoring twice to win 4-2.
