Biden Pushes for Supreme Court Reforms and Amendment to Remove Presidential Immunity
President Joe Biden made a call on Monday for changes to the Supreme Court, proposing new rules such as term limits for justices, a mandatory code of conduct, and ethics regulations. Additionally, he suggested a constitutional amendment to remove presidential immunity from prosecution.
In an article published by The Washington Post, Biden emphasized the principle that no one, not even the president or Supreme Court justices, is above the law. A White House official stated that the president believes in limiting the power of the executive branch and ensuring accountability for criminal acts committed by presidents.
Biden plans to present these reforms at the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin, Texas, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.
Advocating for these changes, Biden underlined the need for 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices, aligning with his proposal for regular changes in membership to avoid prolonged political influence. He expressed concern over the current state of affairs within the Court, which he believes undermines public trust in its decisions.
Furthermore, the president is urging the implementation of a comprehensive code of conduct and ethical guidelines for Supreme Court justices, emphasizing transparency and conflict of interest disclosure. He argues that justices should adhere to the same standards as other federal judges.
Biden’s initiative for Supreme Court reform follows reports of ethical concerns within the Court, such as justices allegedly receiving undisclosed benefits and engaging in questionable associations. The president aims to address these issues through his proposed reforms, seeking to restore public confidence in the highest court in the land.
