Colombian President Gustavo Petro recently found himself in the middle of a diplomatic controversy with the United States after he initially refused to allow deported nationals back into Colombia. This decision led to a series of repercussions, including President Donald Trump imposing sweeping tariffs and sanctions on Colombia.
US President Donald Trump retaliated by imposing a 25 per cent tariff on Colombian products, with plans to increase it to 50 per cent within a week if Colombia did not change its stance on accepting deportation flights. Feeling the pressure from these measures, President Petro eventually reversed his decision and agreed to allow the deportees from the US to return to Colombia.
Who is Gustavo Petro?
Gustavo Petro, born in Cienaga de Oro, is one of Colombia’s most controversial and influential political figures. He holds a degree in economics from Universidad Externado de Colombia and pursued further graduate studies at the Escuela Superior de Administracion Publica (ESAP).
Petro is notable for being the first former guerrilla fighter to hold the highest office in Colombia. He was a member of the M-19 movement, a left-wing guerrilla group that demobilized in the late 1980s. Following the disarmament of the group, he transitioned his career into politics and became a prominent advocate for social justice and peace.
Throughout his political journey, Petro faced challenges and controversies, including being arrested by the Colombian army in 1985 and sentenced to prison on charges of illegal arms possession. However, after his release and involvement in the peace process, he was elected to the Chamber of Representatives in 1991.
Petro’s political career continued to progress, leading to his election to the Colombian Senate in 2006 as a member of the Alternative Democratic Pole (PDA) party. He made history in 2011 by winning the municipal election in Bogota and becoming the city’s mayor. In 2022, he won the presidential elections and was sworn in as the president on August 7 of that year.

The scandal centered around discussions of potential illicit funding for his campaign involving his ambassador to Venezuela, Armando Benedetti, and his chief of staff, Laura Sarabia.
