Delhi’s Serial Killer ‘Butcher’ Captured After Escaping During Parole

Chanderkant Jha: The Notorious Serial Killer Who Terrorized Delhi

Background of the Serial Killer

Chanderkant Jha gained notoriety in Delhi in 2006 and 2007 for a series of gruesome killings that made him one of the most wanted serial killers at the time. After his arrest, Jha, then 57 years old, was sentenced to death. However, in 2016, his conviction was changed to life imprisonment.

Reappearance and Re-Arrest

In October 2023, Jha was expected to return to jail after a 90-day parole. Instead, he decided to go on the run. The Delhi Police recently announced that Jha has been arrested again.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sanjay Sen revealed, “Chanderkant Jha carried a reward of Rs 50,000. He has been traced… After several months of surveillance and planning, he was arrested from New Delhi railway station.” The police team meticulously traced Jha’s network and eventually located him as he attempted to flee to Bihar from the Old Delhi Railway Station.

Modus Operandi and Criminal History

Originally from Bihar, Chanderkant Jha resided near the Azadpur Mandi in Delhi. He would befriend young men, often migrants, by assisting them in finding employment and providing meals. However, minor disagreements or perceived infractions would trigger his homicidal tendencies.

Jha’s method involved tying his victims’ hands, claiming he would punish them, before strangling them with a locally made nunchaku. He would then dismember the bodies with precision to minimize blood splatter. The remains were packed in plastic bags and transported using his modified cycle-rickshaw before being dumped near Tihar Jail.

Notorious Acts and Criminal Record

Chanderkant Jha’s criminal history dates back to 1998 when he killed Mangal alias Aurangzeb in Delhi’s Adarsh Nagar. Despite being arrested in 1998, Jha was released in 2002 and resumed his killing spree.

In subsequent years, Jha committed several more murders, including the killing of his friend Shekhar in Haiderpur, Umesh in Alipur, Guddu in Mangolpuri, and Amit outside Tihar Jail. Each murder was motivated by different reasons, such as perceived betrayal or undesirable habits of the victims.

Conclusion

Chanderkant Jha’s arrest serves as a reminder of the heinous crimes he committed and the extensive efforts required by law enforcement to bring him to justice. His story is a chilling reminder of the presence of such dangerous individuals in society and the importance of vigilant policing to protect the public from such threats.
