DK Shivakumar’s Comment Ignites Controversy

New Delhi:

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently made a controversial statement regarding the ongoing traffic and infrastructural problems in Bengaluru. He asserted that even divine intervention from God cannot solve the city’s issues overnight. This remark by Mr. Shivakumar has sparked criticism on social media, with many expressing frustration over the delayed projects and persistent traffic problems plaguing the city.

Challenges Faced by Bengaluru Residents

Mr. Shivakumar stated, “Bengaluru can’t be changed in two or three years. Even God can’t do that. It can be changed only when proper planning is done and executed well.” His comments come at a time when Bengaluru residents and urban planners are increasingly concerned about worsening traffic conditions, delayed metro expansion, and inadequate public transport. Critics argue that while ambitious infrastructure projects have been announced, the execution has been slow and inconsistent.

Response from Economist Mohandas Pai

Economist and Aarin Capital chairman Mohandas Pai challenged Mr. Shivakumar’s statement, questioning the government’s progress in improving Bengaluru’s infrastructure. He took to social media to express his disappointment, stating, “Minister DK Shivakumar, it has been two years since you became our Minister! We applauded and welcomed you as a strong Minister. But our lives have become much worse!”

Mr. Pai highlighted the incomplete major infrastructure projects, poor condition of footpaths, and inadequate public transport in the city. He called for urgent measures, such as the immediate purchase of 5,000 new electric buses, creating a cleaner and more walkable city, and round-the-clock work on metro expansion.

Criticism from Opposition BJP

The opposition BJP also criticized Mr. Shivakumar’s comments, accusing the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government of Karnataka of gross incompetency in addressing the issues faced by Bengaluru residents. The slow progress on infrastructure projects and the lack of effective solutions have been major points of contention.

Government’s Response and Plans

Mr. Shivakumar later announced that the government has released a handbook on roads, which aims to address all pending issues in the Karnataka capital. The handbook includes plans for designing new roads and bus stands to alleviate the severe traffic problems in the city. This initiative is seen as a step towards addressing the concerns raised by residents and experts alike.
