The sea-facing mansion, dubbed Andhra’s “Sheeshmahal” by critics, consists of four expansive blocks spread over a 10-acre area. The building in Rushikonda boasts extravagant interiors with gold embellishments, Italian marble flooring, plush furnishings, sparkling chandeliers, and bathtubs. The infrastructure also includes paved roads, a drainage system, bulk water supply, and a 100 KV power substation.
Controversy and Debate
The ruling Telugu Desam Party of Chandrababu Naidu claims that the mansion was initially intended to be a camp office for Mr. Reddy. However, its purpose has evolved over time, leading to speculation and allegations of environmental violations and misuse of public funds. The project received CRZ clearance from the central government in May 2021, but concerns have been raised about the demolition of half of Rushikonda hill for its construction.
Call for Public Debate
Chief Minister Naidu has called for a debate on the use of the mansion and has even proposed opening it for public viewing. He has criticized the former Chief Minister for allegedly cheating courts, committing environmental violations, and misusing public money for a lavish lifestyle. The decision on how to utilize the building and generate revenue for the government is pending.
Comparison to Arvind Kejriwal’s Residence
Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence in Delhi, known as Flagstaff Road bungalow, became a contentious issue during the election. The cost of renovating the bungalow exceeded initial estimates and raised questions about expenditure. Similarly, the lavishness of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s mansion has sparked debates about the role of leaders in politics and the use of public funds.
