Former BBC Anchor Under Investigation for Possession of Inappropriate Images of Minors

Former British TV news broadcaster Huw Edwards has been accused of three instances of producing inappropriate images of minors. Legal papers suggest the allegations concern 37 pictures discovered on a child’s mobile device, exchanged on a WhatsApp conversation between December 2020 and April 2022. 

Edwards was taken into custody on November 8, 2023, and formally accused on June 26, 2024, after approval from the Crown Prosecution Service. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Who is Huw Edwards?

1. Huw Edwards has worked as a TV reporter for 30 years, mainly recognized for hosting BBC News at Ten, the most-viewed news program in Britain. 
2. He was raised in Llangennech, Carmarthenshire, and attended Llanelli Grammar School before pursuing higher education. Currently, he resides in London with his spouse and five offspring. 
3. Huw Edwards completed his studies at Cardiff University with a diploma in French. He also possesses honorary fellowships from Cardiff University, Swansea University, and the University of Wales, Lampeter, as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Glamorgan. 
4. Edwards has hosted coverage of significant occasions, such as the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Royal Wedding (for which he was awarded a BAFTA for Best Coverage of a Live Event), and the swearing-in of US President Barack Obama. He departed from the BBC in April this year.
5. He has also presented various programs on history and classical music on different BBC channels. His documentaries have delved into notable historical figures like David Lloyd George, Gladstone, Disraeli, and Owain Glyndwr. His series The Story of Wales was especially praised, serving as the first television history of Wales in 25 years and garnering multiple accolades.
