Google Maps Reveals Walking 6 Km Is Quicker Than Driving in Bengaluru. Read On.

Bengaluru is notorious for its congestion and lengthy traffic jams. The IT hub was among the two Indian cities that were listed among the world’s top ten most traffic-ridden cities in 2023. That same year, it was also labeled the second most gridlocked city globally. Swift urbanization, inadequate planning, and limited public transportation options are just a few of the reasons why individuals encounter congested roads daily during peak traffic hours in the city. In light of this, Google Maps has now verified that it is occasionally faster to stroll than to drive from point A to B in the IT hub.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), user Ayush Singh shared a Google Maps snapshot displaying the duration it takes to walk versus the duration it takes to drive from Brigade Metropolis to KR Puram Railway Station – a distance of about 6 kilometers. As per the image, driving between the two locations would require 44 minutes, while walking would be marginally quicker at 42 minutes. Sharing the image, Mr Singh remarked, “This only occurs in Bangalore.”

Since its posting, the article has gathered more than 626,000 views and over 14,000 likes. In the comment section, while some users concurred that Bengaluru’s traffic is exhausting, others challenged Mr Singh’s “only in Bengaluru” narrative.
“Same scenario across numerous metropolitan cities worldwide,” noted one user. “Mumbai and Delhi also face a similar situation during peak hours,” mentioned another.
“If time is crucial to you, then I’d like to inform you that KR Puram is the 3rd metro station from Garudacharpalya. Next time, you could give it a try,” proposed a third user.
One user dubbed Bengaluru as the “Traffic capital of India”. “Quit blaming and start utilizing public transportation, which can get you there in 13 minutes,” remarked another user.
“While contrasting the walk with the drive, you neglected to observe the public transport, only 13 minutes away. We frequently overlook that the ultimate solution to traffic lies in public transportation,” added another.
On another note, discussing Bengaluru traffic, earlier this week, an entrepreneur suggested adopting an idea from China to aid residents in coping with daily traffic snags. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), user Paras Chopra shared a snapshot of a news story illustrating how, in Beijing, commuters stuck in traffic can summon a “rescue”. The article details that in Beijing, you can pay someone $60 to rescue you from traffic. “They fetch you on a motorbike, and someone else drives your vehicle to its destination,” the article stated.
Sharing the snapshot, Mr Chopra commented, “Bangalore founders, abandon that saas concept and develop this instead.” His post elicited a variety of reactions from social media users.
