In Q2 2024, Apple’s Mac Computers Dominate AI PC Market with 60% Share; Windows AI PC Shipments Increase by 12%: Canalys
In the second quarter of 2024, global deliveries of artificial intelligence (AI) PCs increased, as per a study by market research company Canalys. Device manufacturers shipped over 8.8 million AI-enabled computers, with Apple’s Mac computers making up the majority of these devices. The usage of these computers is predicted to rise in the latter half of 2024, following the introduction of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X chipset series, which is based on Arm architecture and powers recently introduced Copilot+ PCs from various OEMs.
The most recent report from Canalys indicates that Mac computers powered by Apple Silicon chipsets accounted for 60 percent of AI PC deliveries in Q2 2024, significantly higher than the less than 40 percent of shipments made up by all Windows AI computers during the same period.
All of Apple’s current computers are fitted with M-series chips, unlike Windows computers that still come with some processors not focused on AI. However, most consumers will be able to fully utilize the AI features of their Mac hardware with the introduction of Apple Intelligence features later this year or early in 2025.
Despite Apple leading in shipments in the previous quarter, Windows AI PC deliveries saw a significant sequential increase of 127 percent, according to the research company. Lenovo’s Yoga Slim and ThinkPad laptops accounted for 6 percent of the market share in this segment, slightly lower than Dell’s 7 percent market share with its Inspiron, XPS, and Latitude models. HP, on the other hand, held an 8 percent market share with the launch of its EliteBook and Omnibook Copilot+ PCs.
According to the research firm, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X series chipsets were only introduced in June, giving OEMs a limited window to deliver enough units of these AI-capable computers in Q2 2024. Nonetheless, these companies have committed to integrating these Arm chipsets into future products, allowing them to offer better performance and efficiency than most x86 chips. “With a solid foundation now in place, shipments of AI-capable PCs are set to increase further in the second half of 2024,” noted Canalys’ Principal Analyst Ishan Dutt.
