Vishvaa Rajakumar, a 20-year-old student from Manakula Vinayagar Institute of Technology in Puducherry, India, has recently made headlines by winning the prestigious Memory League World Championship. The competition, which tests participants’ ability to recall the order of cards, numbers, names, images, and words, saw Mr Rajakumar demonstrate exceptional memory skills.
Impressive feats in memory recall
One of the standout moments during the championship was when Mr Rajakumar memorized the order of 80 random digits in just 13.50 seconds. Additionally, he was able to recall 30 images in a mere 8.53 seconds, showcasing his remarkable cognitive abilities. These impressive performances earned him the title of Memory League World Champion.
Competition format and participants
The Memory League World Championship is conducted online and involves 16 top competitors from around the world. Participants are presented with 80 random numbers on a screen, which they must then write down on a ‘recall sheet’ within a specified time frame. The competition follows a double-elimination tournament format, where competitors move through Main and Repechage brackets until a champion is determined.
Preparation and techniques
In an interview with the New York Times, Mr Rajakumar shed light on his preparation for the championship. He emphasized the importance of hydration for optimal brain function, stating that staying well-hydrated helps with cognitive processes like memorization. Mr Rajakumar also shared insights into his memory palace technique, which involves mentally associating information with specific locations in a familiar environment.

The fast-paced memory game tournament took place from January 5 to February 2, featuring five rounds in each match. The player who won the most rounds emerged as the world champion, with Mr Rajakumar securing the top spot with his exceptional memory prowess.
