Is Congress Facing Another Defeat in Delhi Polls? Trends Suggest 0 Seats for the Party

Counting of votes for Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies is currently underway, and the latest trends suggest that the Congress party may face its third consecutive defeat in the state. Despite initially leading in the early rounds of counting from the Badli seat, the Congress is now trailing in all constituencies.

Congress’ Efforts and Previous Performance

The Congress party, which ruled the national capital for 15 years until 2013, had put in a significant effort to regain its foothold in Delhi’s political landscape. Senior leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held multiple rallies before the polls. However, several exit polls had already predicted a disappointing outcome for the party.

The last time Congress managed to secure seats in Delhi was during the 2013 assembly elections when they won eight seats. The party had a vote share of 24.55%, while the BJP received 33.07% and the AAP 29.49%. Despite this, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 31 seats, just short of a majority in the 70-member house. The AAP won 28 seats and briefly formed a government with Congress before the alliance collapsed after 49 days.

AAP vs BJP in Delhi Assembly Polls

The current election scenario in Delhi sees the ruling AAP aiming for a fourth consecutive victory, while the BJP is looking to make a comeback after its last win in 1998. Initial counting trends on the Election Commission website show the BJP leading in 41 assembly seats, with AAP ahead in 29.

Key Leaders and Projections

AAP leaders Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia are leading from their respective seats, although Chief Minister Atishi is currently trailing. If the AAP secures a victory, it will mark their fourth consecutive term in power, surpassing Congress’ previous 15-year reign in the national capital.

Despite the AAP’s strong hold on Delhi since 2015, exit polls suggest that the BJP may have an advantage in this election. The final results will determine whether the AAP can maintain its stronghold or if the BJP will stage a successful comeback in the state.
