Kamala Harris secures Democratic nomination with majority of roll call votes

Kamala Harris, the Vice President, has officially secured the vast majority of delegate votes in the virtual roll call that designates her as the Democratic presidential nominee, according to a statement released by the Democratic National Committee late on Monday.

The roll call, which was completed on Monday evening, still needs certification from Convention Secretary Jason Rae, as noted in the statement. However, the announcement solidifies Harris’s groundbreaking nomination as official.

“With the endorsement of 99% of all participating delegates in the virtual roll call, Vice President Harris is making history with strong support as we move forward in officially confirming her as our Party’s nominee. We express our gratitude to the numerous delegates from all corners of the country who fulfilled their duty throughout this process to ensure their voices – and the voices of their communities – were heard,” stated party chair Jaime Harrison and Democratic National Convention Committee Chair Minyon Moore.

Harris garnered 4,567 votes from delegates, as reported by the Democratic National Committee.

Harris holds the distinction of being the first Black and South Asian woman to lead a major party ticket.

Harris had effectively been the front-runner for the party’s nomination since Friday, when Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison declared during a livestream call that Harris had accumulated adequate Democratic Party delegate votes in a virtual roll call to secure the party’s nomination.

Harris was the sole contender who launched a campaign to replace President Joe Biden after he exited the race, and the only aspirant who garnered enough delegate endorsements to proceed to the virtual roll call.

Delegates of the convention have been participating in virtual voting via email or phone since 9 a.m. ET on Thursday in a virtual roll call organized by the Democratic National Committee. Delegates had until Monday at 6 p.m. ET to cast their votes in the nomination process.
