Kerala Girl, Who Fell Unconscious After Receiving Incorrect Injection, Dies
Her family has alleged that medical negligence led to her death.
Thiruvananthapuram: A 28-year-old woman, who had fallen unconscious after allegedly being administered an incorrect injection by a doctor at a state-run hospital five days ago, died here on Sunday, according to sources.
The woman, Krishna Thankappan from nearby Malayinkeezhu, took her last breath at the Government Medical College Hospital here in the morning.
Her family had previously alleged that medical negligence was the reason for her being unconscious for five days.
They accused Dr. Vinu of Neyyattinkara General Hospital of administering the incorrect injection when she sought treatment there for kidney stones last week.
As her condition worsened and she fell unconscious, Krishna was then shifted to the Medical College here, they said.
Following a complaint from her husband Sharath, Neyyattinkara police registered a case against Dr. Vinu under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on July 19.
BNS 125 pertains to acts endangering life or personal safety of others.
According to the FIR, the woman, who already had some allergy issues, sought treatment from Dr. Vinu for kidney stone-related problems.
The doctor allegedly showed negligence by administering an injection without conducting any allergy test on her, the FIR stated.
However, the Kerala Government Medical Officers’ Association (KGMOA) has rejected the family’s allegations against the doctor.
In a statement, the association claimed that the injection given by the doctor was a standard one used for patients suffering from stomach-related issues.
Anaphylaxis, a rapid and severe allergic reaction that can occur due to any medication, could have been the cause of the woman’s critical condition, they said.
“It cannot be considered medical negligence,” the KGMOA asserted.
Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor expressed condolences for the woman’s death and called for a thorough investigation into the allegations of medical negligence reported at the state-run hospital.
