Marnus Labuschagne of Australia Retires Iconic World Cup-Winning Bat; Indian Fans Share Their Reactions

Australian batsman Marnus Labuschange has decided to retire a special piece of cricket memorabilia. The 30-year-old has put away the cricket bat he utilized in Australia’s 2023 World Cup-winning final against India. Labuschagne evoked some unpleasant memories for Indian fans on social media, as he revealed that he would be retiring the bat, which is now in a damaged state. Labuschagne had delivered an undefeated fifty against India in the World Cup final, aiding Australia in clinching their sixth World Cup title.

Entering the crease with Australia in trouble at 47/3, chasing a target of 241, Labuschagne played the role of a perfect anchor, enabling Travis Head to lead the run chase on the other end. While Head scored 137 in just 120 deliveries, Labuschagne remained not out until the end, finishing on 58 off 110 balls. He formed a 192-run partnership with Head, practically ensuring victory for the Australians.

Labuschagne shared a picture of his bat from that match on social media. Evidently, his Kookaburra bat is in rough shape, with a significant portion of the willow at the center and bottom of the bat having come off.

Indian fans respond

Indian fans reacted to Labuschagne’s tweet in various ways.

One fan lamented the fact that Labuschagne had reserved a good knock for the crucial final.

“We dislike that bat and that innings Marnus, we don’t mind you performing well against Eng but why India, why against India” replied one fan.

Another fan paid homage to the significance of a bat even for established cricketers.

“We used to believe that only individuals like us who play in school, club etc. cherish such bats. Attachment is like this, the favorite bat cannot be easily abandoned. He is such a prominent player,” remarked another.

Labuschagne amassed 362 runs in 10 innings during the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
