PhD Student Embarks on 134-Day Journey Across China Without a Phone, Reflects on Unplugged Experience
His study focuses on the significant influence of digitalization on human lives.
In the current digital era, smartphones have become a crucial instrument for daily activities, making it difficult to envision existence without one. Mobile devices keep us linked to family, friends, and work and offer immediate access to data, news, and wisdom. However, a doctoral candidate in China recently set off on a thrilling journey, traveling throughout the nation for 134 days without a cell phone.
As mentioned in the South China Morning Post, Yang Hao, a doctoral candidate, departed from his birthplace of Taiyuan, the chief city of Shanxi province, in November, and journeyed extensively for half a year, encompassing a remarkable 24 provinces and regions. He left his smartphone and laptop at home, selecting instead two cameras without internet connectivity to record his adventures.
”I perceive the mobile phone as a digital organ for us. There are countless things we cannot accomplish without it. Hence, I desired to investigate the repercussions of having no internet access whatsoever. How does the experience unfold, let’s say, over several months?” Mr. Hao expressed.
Naturally, his technology-free excursion across China was filled with hurdles. Basic tasks turned into formidable barriers, such as reserving a lodging or flagging down a cab. Devoid of a cell phone, he had to depend on traditional techniques, frequently leading to exasperating encounters. Several stores lacked card terminals, forcing him to seek out ATMs for cash withdrawals. Nonetheless, by interacting with fellow travelers and locals, he devised inventive solutions to his dilemmas.
”Nearly everyone who learned of my mobile-free lifestyle was taken aback. Some inquired if I engaged in illicit activities, others pondered if I held a distinctive occupation, while a few found it intriguing to exist minus a cell phone,” he disclosed.
Nevertheless, Mr. Hao stumbled upon an unexpected advantage during his phoneless journey. Devoid of the ceaseless buzz of notifications and social networks, he could dedicate himself to more substantial undertakings. He spent his time immersed in literature, writing, and introspection. His odyssey eventually reached a full circle in April when he arrived back home, carrying with him a plethora of fresh encounters and insights.
”I resemble an ancient individual who has journeyed through time to the contemporary era. All those predicaments and delights filled me with enthusiasm. It was a remarkable life experience,” Mr. Hao articulated.
This digital detox was not a mere coincidence, as his study revolves around the profound impact of digitalization on human lives. He is presently devising a plan to release a book amalgamating the essays he authored during his expedition, furnishing a written record of his escapades. Additionally, he is engaged in producing a documentary based on the footage he captured while on the move.
