Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed for Mauritius late Monday night on a two-day State visit. He will attend the National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest on March 12. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit is aimed at strengthening the enduring ties between India and Mauritius.

Strengthening Bilateral Partnership

In his departure statement, PM Modi expressed his anticipation of engaging with the Mauritius leadership to elevate the bilateral partnership and strengthen friendship for security and development in the Indian Ocean Region. He referred to Mauritius as a close maritime neighbor, a key partner in the Indian Ocean, and a gateway to the African continent.

PM Modi’s Appreciation for the Mauritius Relationship

PM Modi expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam for the invitation to participate in the 57th National Day celebrations of Mauritius. He emphasized the historical, geographical, and cultural connections between India and Mauritius, stating that deep mutual trust and shared values of democracy and diversity are the strengths of their relationship.

Building on Past Foundations

PM Modi expressed confidence that his visit would build on the foundations of the past and open a new and bright chapter in the India-Mauritius relationship. He highlighted the significant strides made in the past ten years through people-centric initiatives and emphasized the shared pride in the close people-to-people connect between the two nations.

Key Agenda and Objectives of the Visit

During his visit, PM Modi will meet with the Mauritius President, Prime Minister, and senior dignitaries. He will also interact with members of the Indian-origin community and inaugurate the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre, both built with India’s grant assistance. Several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be exchanged during the visit.

The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India and Mauritius share a close and special relationship rooted in shared historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties. The visit is expected to reaffirm the strong and enduring bond between the two countries and reinforce their shared commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across all sectors.

Indian High Commissioner to Mauritius, Anurag Srivastava, highlighted the special relationship between India and Mauritius, describing it as strong, robust, and multifaceted. He anticipated important agreements in areas of maritime security, capacity building, and other crucial sectors to be made during the visit.
