This announcement came after nearly two weeks of suspense. She joins the ranks of other women chief ministers of Delhi, such as BJP’s Sushma Swaraj, Congress’ Sheila Dikshit, and Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi.

Victory in Assembly Polls

The 50-year-old Rekha Gupta, who is a first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, emerged victorious in the February 5 Assembly polls. She defeated AAP candidate Bandna Kumari by over 29,000 votes. Despite facing defeat in the same constituency in the 2015 and 2020 Delhi elections, Ms. Gupta finally secured the seat this time.

Oath-Taking Ceremony

Ms. Gupta is set to take oath at a grand swearing-in ceremony at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi at noon tomorrow. Expressing her gratitude for being entrusted with the responsibility of Chief Minister, she vowed to work with honesty, integrity, and dedication for the welfare and development of every citizen of Delhi.

Early Life and Political Career

Born on July 19, 1974, in Nandgarh village of Jind district in Haryana, Rekha Gupta’s political journey began during her college days at Delhi University. She was actively involved in student politics and eventually became the President of Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) for the 1996-1997 term. Her leadership skills and dedication led her to join the BJP’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), in the early 2000s.

Ms. Gupta’s organizational abilities and commitment to the party’s goals earned her various roles within the BJP, including serving as a councillor in the MCD elections in 2007 and as the President of the Women’s Welfare and Child Development Committee in MCD from 2007 to 2009. She also held positions such as General Secretary of the Delhi BJP Women’s Wing and National Executive Member of the party.

Electoral Victory and BJP’s Return to Power

The BJP’s landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections marked the party’s return to power after 27 years. With 48 seats secured, the BJP won a two-thirds majority, while the ruling AAP suffered significant losses, securing only 22 seats in the 70-member assembly. The Congress, on the other hand, failed to win any seats for the third consecutive time.

In conclusion, Rekha Gupta’s rise to become the Chief Minister of Delhi signifies a significant milestone in her political career and underscores the BJP’s resurgence in the capital city’s political landscape. With her experience and dedication, Ms. Gupta is poised to lead Delhi towards new heights of progress and development.
