Report: Sheikh Hasina to remain in India until asylum is granted by the UK

Sheikh Hasina’s sojourn in India is only temporary, awaiting her resettlement to Britain.

New Delhi:

The Indian government has sanctioned former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina an interim stay following the downfall of her government in the South Asian nation on Monday, as per media reports.

During this period, India will provide extensive logistical assistance as Hasina seeks refuge in the UK, Daily Sun reported.

Her residence in India is approved only temporarily, pending her relocation to Britain.

Hasina, who stepped down on Monday amid unprecedented anti-government demonstrations, is en route to London via India.

As of now, there has been no confirmation from the UK government regarding the approval of political asylum for the former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Daily Sun reported.

Hasina is currently seeking refuge in the UK, accompanied by her sister Rehana, a British citizen.

Rehana, the younger daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the “Father of Bangladesh,” and Sheikh Fazilatun Necha Mujib, is also the younger sibling of Sheikh Hasina. Her daughter, Tulip Siddiq, serves as a member of the British Parliament representing the Labour Party.

Meanwhile, Indian government sources stated that New Delhi is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving events in Dhaka.

In Dhaka, Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar-uz-Zaman announced that Hasina has resigned and an interim government is assuming control of the responsibilities.

“I am assuming all responsibilities (of the country). Please cooperate,” he stated in a televised address.

The Army Chief mentioned that he had met with political leaders and informed them that the Army would take charge of maintaining law and order.

Over 100 individuals have lost their lives in the protests against the Hasina administration over the past two days.
