In 2023, hit-and-run incidents accounted for 38 per cent of all fatal crashes on Mumbai roads, with pedestrians being the majority of victims at 54 per cent, according to a report published by the city traffic police. This data highlights a concerning trend in road safety in the bustling city.
Statistics and Analysis
The report revealed that Mumbai reported 374 deaths in 351 road crashes in 2023, marking a 39 per cent decrease since 2015. Among the victims, occupants of two and three-wheeler vehicles comprised 48 per cent, while pedestrians made up 40 per cent of the fatalities.
Furthermore, males accounted for 82 per cent of the deaths, with the 20-39 years age group being the most affected demographic at 47 per cent. Most motorcyclists who lost their lives in road accidents were in the 20-29 years age group, indicating a vulnerable population.
Location-Based Analysis
The data also highlighted specific areas in Mumbai where a significant number of road crash deaths occurred. The intersection of the Sion-Panvel Highway, Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road, and Worli seaface junction were identified as hotspots for pedestrian fatalities. Additionally, the Western Express Highway (WEH), Sion-Bandra Link Road, and Baiganwadi signal junction witnessed a high number of deaths and injuries.
Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marg and Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road were noted to have the highest number of deaths and injuries per kilometre, with 10 deaths per kilometre reported in 2023 on those roads.
Recommendations for Road Safety
The report suggested several measures to address the alarming rate of road crash deaths in Mumbai. These included reducing speed limits, enhancing enforcement of clasped motorcycle helmets and seat belts, creating more walkable streets, and improving pedestrian and cycle infrastructure. By implementing these recommendations, authorities aim to mitigate the risks associated with road travel and ensure the safety of all road users in the city.
