On Monday, a panel of jurors was selected for the trial of Susan Lorincz, the Florida resident accused of fatally shooting her neighbor, Ajike “AJ” Owens, a Black mother of four, in 2023 following a dispute with Owens’ children.

Anthony Thomas, the lawyer representing Ajike Owens’ family, informed ABC News in a statement on Monday that prosecutors plan to call two of Owens’ children to testify during the trial.

Regrettably, we have verified that they will be summoned to testify. This is an incredibly painful ordeal for them as they grapple with the profound emotional scars from losing their mother in a violent manner. And witnessing her killing. Izzy was right next to her when that bullet entered his mother’s body,” Thomas stated, revealing that Isaac, 13, and Izzy (Israel), 10, are “committed to testifying” on behalf of their mother “despite their sorrow.”

“Out of deep love and admiration for her, they are doing this, recognizing the importance of their voices in the quest for justice,” Thomas stated. “They grasp the seriousness of this moment and aim to ensure that their mother’s demise is not without purpose.”

Presiding over the case, Judge Robert W. Hodges of Florida Fifth Judicial Circuit read out the jury instructions to the panel and assured them that they will not be filmed. He instructed the jurors to return to court on Tuesday morning and predicted that the trial will conclude by Friday.

“The trial is scheduled to last one week. [It will] likely conclude by Friday, if not sooner,” Hodges announced on Monday morning.

Lorincz was in the courtroom during jury selection and has entered a plea of not guilty to the first-degree felony manslaughter charge.

The accusations

Susan Lorincz, who is Caucasian, was apprehended on June 6, 2023, and indicted for first-degree felony manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison upon conviction, as per the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. She was also accused of negligent behavior, assault, and two counts of battery, but those less severe allegations have been dismissed based on court documents.

Lorincz pleaded not guilty on July 10, 2023. She was detained on a $150,000 bond and has been held in custody since her arrest last year. Sizemore, the lawyer representing Lorincz, had previously chosen not to provide any comments regarding the accusation her client is facing and did not promptly respond to ABC News’ request for a statement before the trial.

Throughout the last year, Owens’ family has consistently urged prosecutors to elevate the accusation against Lorincz to second-degree murder, but Florida State Attorney William “Bill” Gladson stated in a June 26, 2023, statement that there was insufficient proof to substantiate a murder charge in court.

“Despite the defendant’s reprehensible behavior in this instance, there is insufficient evidence to support this particular and necessary aspect of second-degree murder,” Gladson remarked.

What the footage indicates

As per a June 6, 2023, report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Lorincz purportedly fired at Owens through a shut door while in the company of her now ten-year-old son after Owens, a mother of four children, went to converse with Lorincz about a disagreement involving Owens’ kids playing near Lorincz’s residence.

Prior to Lorincz’s trial, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office disclosed footage on June 10, 2024, of Lorincz’s two-hour questioning session, which occurred four days after the fatal shooting.

Lorincz asserted during her interview with detectives that she acted in self-defense when she fired at Owens.

“She was stating ‘I’m going to kill you,'” Lorincz alleged in the video.

“No one that we’ve interviewed so far has made any statements about her expressing her desire to kill you,” one of the detectives informed Lorincz.

Body camera footage unveiled on July 3, 2023, by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office revealed seven occurrences between Feb. 25, 2022, and April 25, 2023, in which Lorincz contacted sheriff’s deputies to report about neighborhood children, including Owens’ children, playing close to her residence.

The body camera videos also depict a child alleging in statements to sheriff’s deputies that Lorincz referred to the children in the vicinity as “the N-word” and another who accused Lorincz of being “racist.”

Throughout the interrogation, Lorincz continuously refuted using racial slurs towards Owens and her children on the evening of the shooting, but in accordance with a police report, Lorincz confessed to referring to children in the neighborhood using the N-word and other disparaging terms in the past.

“I do not have a statement at this moment,” Sizemore informed ABC News on July 3, 2023, when questioned about the release of the body camera footage and the accusation that Lorincz referred to the children using the “N-word.”
