Hunter Biden, the offspring of President Joe Biden, endeavored to secure support from the U.S. Ambassador to Italy in 2016 to set up a business meeting on behalf of Burisma for a potential energy agreement, as per his legal counsel.

The New York Times originally disclosed the outreach, which took place during Joe Biden’s tenure as vice president.

In a declaration to ABC News on Tuesday night, Abbe Lowell, a legal representative for Hunter Biden, described Hunter Biden’s correspondence to John Phillips, the U.S. ambassador in Rome at that time, seeking a “simple introduction” as a “routine and appropriate procedure.”

“No encounter transpired, no project came to fruition, no appeal for anything in the U.S. was ever made, and only an introduction in Italy was requested,” Lowell stated.

The New York Times stated that it had obtained records related to Hunter Biden’s plea after an extensive legal battle with the State Department. The publication noted in an article released on Tuesday that the initial request for these records was filed in June 2021 and a lawsuit was later filed when the department did not comply.

The Times also pointed out that a State Department official mentioned that the release of these specific documents, just weeks after Joe Biden terminated his presidential campaign, was coincidental.

The precise wording of Hunter Biden’s 2016 message to Ambassador John Phillips was not included in the documents obtained by the Times. However, according to Lowell, Hunter Biden contacted the embassy to inquire “if they could facilitate a simple introduction of Burisma’s Geothermal company to the President of Tuscany where such proposals were under review.”

The feedback Hunter Biden received from an embassy assistant implied discomfort with official U.S. collaboration.

“I want to be cautious about committing too much,” a Commerce Department official located in Rome replied to Hunter Biden, according to the Times. “This is a Ukrainian company and, purely to protect ourselves, [U.S. The company should not be actively pushing the case with the Italian government without going through the Department of Commerce Advocacy Center.

During his tax case in California, Hunter Biden served on the board of Burisma for almost five years and made over $2 million from the energy company.

This recent disclosure adds to previous claims that Hunter Biden tried to exploit his influence for financial gain.

In court documents last week, prosecutors alleged that the younger Biden received payments from a Romanian businessman who sought his help in “influencing U.S. government entities” while his father was vice president.

In response to the accusations involving the Romanian businessman, Hunter Biden’s lawyers criticized the Special Counsel’s change in strategy, calling it baseless and echoing false claims made by House Republicans.

Hunter Biden addressed his involvement with Burisma in an interview with ABC News in October 2019, admitting that he likely would not have been offered the position if he did not have the Biden name, but asserting that he did nothing wrong by taking on international work while his father was vice president.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
