The director of the Animal Husbandry Department, Damodar Naidu, revealed that samples of the deceased chickens have been sent to a high-security lab in Bhopal and also to Vijayawada for testing. The aim is to determine the underlying disease or infection responsible for the deaths of such a large number of birds.

Negligence and Spread of Infection

Naidu expressed concern over the negligence of biosecurity measures by poultry farmers, which he believes has contributed to the spread of diseases among the chicken population. Some farmers have been found to dispose of dead birds in canals and on garbage dumps, inadvertently aiding in the transmission of infections.

Increased Mortality Rates

While such mortality events are typically seasonal and expected to some extent, the current situation has been exacerbated by the presence of a higher number of migratory birds and the failure of farmers to adhere to basic precautions. The mortality rate, which is usually around 0.5 percent, has surged to 4 percent during this crisis.

Importance of Biosecurity and Poultry Management

Naidu emphasized the importance of implementing better poultry management practices and biosecurity measures to prevent such outbreaks in the future. He mentioned that vaccination is available for low pathogenic strains of avian influenza but not for high pathogenic strains, highlighting the need for proactive measures to protect poultry flocks.

Government Response and Farmer Demands

In response to the crisis, the Animal Husbandry Department is conducting sensitization meetings with farmers and providing guidance on health and hygiene practices. Poultry farmers have requested compensation and loan rescheduling from the government to cope with the financial impact of the mass mortality event.
