Senator: Trump shooting suspect frequented gun range numerous times, even on holidays

The alleged shooter in the attempted murder of former President Donald Trump frequented a gun club numerous times in the year before the assault, including on special occasions, according to documents recently acquired by Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, as gripping body camera footage of the incident also surfaces.

Documents obtained by Grassley’s office and disclosed Thursday reveal Thomas Matthew Crooks’ “determined preparation in the months leading up to his failed assassination of the former president,” Grassley’s office stated.

The records were provided by the Clairton Sportsmen’s Club Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, in response to a congressional inquiry, Grassley’s office reported.

The documents released by Grassley’s office demonstrate that since joining the gun club on Aug. 10, 2023 — just under a year before the July 13 assassination attempt — Crooks went to the range a total of 43 times, with 20 visits in his initial four months of membership.

Crooks spent multiple holidays at the range, including Christmas Day, Valentine’s Day, and Halloween, as indicated by the records released by Grassley’s office.

The majority of his visits — 80% — were dedicated to rifle practice, according to Grassley’s office.

“He almost entirely concentrated on the rifle range throughout 2024,” Grassley’s office remarked.

The Clairton Sportsmen’s Club had previously verified to ABC News that Crooks made his final visit to the gun club on July 12 — the day prior to the rally. He was at the range at 2:45 p.m. local time that day, according to the documents released by Grassley’s office.

Crooks, 20, is accused of discharging as many as eight rounds from the roof of a building outside the security perimeter of the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, before being eliminated by a Secret Service counter-sniper.
