Terrifying Hazing Incident Unfolds at Kerala Medical College
Kerala Ragging Incident: Fresh Case of Brutal Abuse in Government College
A recent ragging incident at Government Nursing College in Kottayam, Kerala has shocked the nation. Five third-year nursing students have been arrested for allegedly subjecting their juniors to months of brutal physical and mental abuse. The incident came to light when three first-year students from Thiruvananthapuram filed a formal complaint with the Kottayam Gandhinagar police, detailing a series of violent acts that began in November 2024 and continued for nearly three months.
Details of the Abuse
According to the complaint, the first-year students were subjected to horrific acts of violence by their seniors. They were forced to stand naked while dumbbells were hung from their private parts. The victims were also stabbed with sharp objects, including compasses from a geometry box, causing injuries. To add to the cruelty, lotion was applied to the wounds, causing excruciating pain. When the victims screamed in agony, the lotion was forcibly smeared into their mouths. The seniors allegedly filmed these acts and threatened the juniors with dire consequences if they reported the abuse.
Extortion and Bullying
In addition to the physical abuse, the seniors also extorted money from the juniors on Sundays to buy alcohol. Those who refused to comply were beaten. One student, unable to bear the harassment any longer, informed his father, who encouraged him to approach the police. As a result, all five seniors involved in the abuse have been suspended and arrested under the Anti-Ragging Act. They are currently in police custody and are expected to be produced before a magistrate soon.
Rising Concerns over Bullying and Ragging
This incident comes in the wake of a 15-year-old schoolboy in Kochi who died by suicide after being bullied by his peers. The student’s mother alleged that the bullying pushed her son towards taking his own life. These incidents highlight the urgent need for stricter measures to prevent bullying and ragging in educational institutions.
Conclusion
The recent ragging incident at Government Nursing College in Kottayam has once again brought the issue of bullying and abuse among students to the forefront. It is essential for authorities to take strict action against perpetrators of such acts to ensure the safety and well-being of all students. Education institutions must also focus on creating a safe and supportive environment for students to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
