Washington Sundar Excited for Series-Deciding 3rd ODI vs Sri Lanka: A Chance to Uncover Solutions

India all-rounder Washington Sundar believes that the crucial third and final ODI against Sri Lanka presents a significant opportunity to counter the spin threat in difficult conditions and set the team up well for the upcoming Champions Trophy next year. The Indian team is facing the prospect of their first bilateral ODI series loss against the Islanders in 27 years following a 32-run defeat in the second ODI, largely due to the subpar performance of the batters who struggled against the Lankan spinners. “This is a chance for us to step up and succeed in those key moments,” Sundar told journalists ahead of the match.

“With major tournaments on the horizon, we will encounter similar situations, and it will be crucial to figure out how to excel in those pivotal moments, especially in comparable conditions against a formidable spin attack.

“I believe we can learn from our experiences in this series so far, and strive to progress and secure a victory in all facets of the game tomorrow.”

“We are adept at playing spin, it’s just a matter of adapting”

Sundar also defended the batters, who have struggled against spin in the series. “We are skilled at facing spin. We have experience playing on such pitches, both at home and in different formats. Even in domestic cricket, we encounter similar conditions,” he said.

“Many of our players have performed admirably, particularly in the middle order, against spin. It’s just about adapting individually and getting the job done.

“Everyone knows these wickets are challenging. The Indian team has always risen to the occasion, especially in tough situations. We have excelled with both bat and ball, emerging victorious from challenging scenarios,” he added.

“That has been the hallmark of the Indian cricket team over the years. The same holds true for this series as well. It’s about finding individual solutions and getting the job done.” The 24-year-old mentioned that the team has made tactical adjustments based on inputs from new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

“We have received valuable insights from him (Gambhir). He is a seasoned player of spin. He has delivered exceptional performances on such pitches against quality spinners.

“That’s why we are here today, practicing and trying to make tactical changes to be fully prepared for tomorrow’s game and perform at our best in all aspects,” Sundar explained.

Sundar, who played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the third T20I in Pallekele with a match-winning performance in a Super Over, emphasized his desire to capitalize on the opportunities that come his way. “It’s important for me to make valuable contributions with the bat, help the team succeed, and particularly win games, especially when chasing targets and under pressure,” he stated.

Discussing his bowling, Sundar mentioned making some adjustments but stressed the importance of finding a good rhythm.

“I am committed to working hard and finding ways to be successful and contribute to the team’s success.

“When it comes to my bowling, I have made some slight changes, focusing on rhythm and technical aspects. Getting these elements right helps me perform well and deliver for the team,” he concluded.
