Will Vinesh win the Olympic silver medal? CAS to announce decision today…

The impromptu division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will announce its verdict on the appeal lodged by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat against her disqualification from the Olympic finals by 6pm local time (9.30pm IST) on Saturday. The hearing on the issue concluded here on Friday after it approved Vinesh’s appeal against her removal for exceeding the weight limit by 100gm on the morning of her final against eventual gold medalist Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of USA. “By implementation of Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules form the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division extends the time limit for the Panel to give a decision until 10 August 2024 at 18h00 (Paris time),” a statement from the CAS said.

This was following the ad-hoc division, established particularly for dispute resolution during the Olympics, stating that a decision can be anticipated before the conclusion of the Paris Games on Sunday.

Following the hearing, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had asserted that they were optimistic about a “favorable resolution”.

“Indian Olympic Association remained optimistic about a favorable resolution of wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s application before the Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her unsuccessful weigh-in,” the IOA stated on Friday.

In the championship match, Vinesh was substituted by Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, who was defeated by her in the semifinals on Tuesday.

In her appeal, the Indian has requested that she be awarded a shared silver with Lopez as she was within the specified weight limit during her matches on Tuesday.

Vinesh was represented by renowned senior lawyers Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania.
