Jerry Jones Initiates Talks with Deion Sanders for Cowboys Head Coach Position
In a significant development for the Dallas Cowboys, owner and general manager Jerry Jones has reached out to current Colorado head coach and former Cowboys player Deion Sanders regarding the team’s vacant head coaching position. This conversation marks the early stages of the Cowboys’ search to find a successor for Mike McCarthy, who recently parted ways with the franchise after five seasons.
According to a reliable source, Jones and Sanders had a discussion on Monday. Although no formal interview has been set up yet, both parties are expected to keep the lines of communication open. This information was first reported by Fox Sports.
Deion Sanders, who previously played as a cornerback for the Cowboys and was instrumental in their Super Bowl XXX victory in 1996, expressed his thoughts to ESPN’s Adam Schefter about the conversation. “To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said. He further emphasized his deep affection for Boulder, Colorado, where he has been coaching. “I love Boulder and everything about our team, the coaches, our student body, and the community,” he added.
In his second season at Colorado, Sanders has achieved a record of 13-12, including an impressive 9-4 run in 2024, during which he coached Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. Despite speculation regarding his potential move to the NFL, Sanders previously stated, “I’m happy where I am. I love it here, truly do.”
Sanders signed a lucrative five-year, $29.5 million contract when he took over at Colorado in late 2022, following a successful stint at Jackson State. His relationship with the Jones family has remained strong, even after his illustrious playing career.
According to the NFL’s Rooney Rule, teams are required to interview at least two external minority candidates during their head coach search. In light of this, it’s important to note that while the Cowboys are actively seeking new coaching candidates, they are currently in a period of compliance with these regulations.
Following the announcement of McCarthy’s departure, he finishes his tenure with a 49-35 regular-season record, including a 7-10 mark for the current season. Even as the Cowboys begin their search for a new head coach, McCarthy is reportedly set to interview with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday and is also expected to meet with the New Orleans Saints soon thereafter.
