Dog Speedrunning MLB on Super Nintendo Is One of the Most Wholesome Things You’ll See Today

At a charity speedrunning event, a dog named Peanut Butter successfully completed a game of MLB on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball.

Peanut Butter, a Shiba Inu, participated in the Summer Games Done Quick 2024 event in Minneapolis, Minnesota, hosted by Games Done Quick. During the event, he raised money for Doctors Without Borders by playing a video game.

Peanut Butter, an established speedrunner, tackled the game of MLB, which involves pressing a single button, with the help of his owner ‘JSR’ offering treats. Peanut Butter swung the bat by pressing his paw down on a big button.

The game concluded with a dramatic extra-innings walk-off two-run home run, finished in 29 minutes and 45 seconds. The crowd erupted in cheers, and Peanut Butter’s owner was proud of his very good boy.

IGN interviewed Peanut Butter and JSR earlier in 2024. JSR mentioned that training Peanut Butter wasn’t too complicated despite the Shiba’s “attention span of a three-year-old.”

“I first had to train him to press the buttons on command, and that was easy,” JSR said. “He’s smart. He picked that up quickly. But dogs have the attention span of a three-year-old, so it took about a year of constant daily training, every single day, with me using his food as collateral. And now he’s pretty good. He can hold the button down for 20 or 30 seconds before he starts getting antsy.”

Meanwhile, Games Done Quick reached a new milestone during Games Done Quick 2024. For the first time in its 14-year history, the speedrunning organization raised a lifetime total of $50 million, a milestone hit during the Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice run by Mitchriz.
