In anticipation of the upcoming solar eclipse, the City of Irving in Texas has embarked on an extraordinary endeavor: crafting the “world’s largest” moon pie to commemorate this celestial event.

Irving, a city situated over 200 miles north of Austin, is embracing grandeur and sweetness as it prepares for the impending solar eclipse. The city’s initiative involves baking a colossal moon pie, dubbed the “world’s largest,” to mark this monumental occasion.

At the Total Eclipse in the Park event, organized by Irving, attendees will have the opportunity to indulge in a slice of this mammoth treat while witnessing the eclipse. This unique experience promises not only four minutes of totality but also a taste of the World’s Largest Moon Pie, as highlighted in a press release from Visit Irving.

Tom Meehan, the general manager of the Irving Convention Center at Los Colinas, expressed the city’s desire to create something extraordinary for this once-in-a-lifetime event. He recounted how the idea was met with astonishment by the chef, who never envisioned undertaking such a feat in his career.

When and Where is Total Eclipse in the Park?
The cosmic celebration will take place at Heritage Park and Levy Event Plaza from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, April 8th.

What to Expect at the Event?
Attendees can look forward to live music, eclipse glasses, space-themed cuisine, and various recreational activities, including gondola cruises and pedal boating. And of course, a complimentary slice of the “World’s Largest Moon Pie” awaits those in attendance.

Why Craft the ‘World’s Largest’ Moon Pie?
The decision to create this monumental dessert was not taken lightly. Diana Pfaff, Vice President of Marketing & Communications at the Irving Convention & Visitors Bureau, explained that the moon pie theme was central to their brainstorming sessions for the event. Additionally, they saw this occasion as an opportunity to showcase the culinary prowess of Eduardo Alvarez, the executive chef at ICC.

To replicate the iconic moon pie, Chef Alvarez embarked on a culinary journey, conducting five test runs to perfect the recipe. Despite initial challenges, he succeeded in creating a delectable masterpiece.

Specifications of Irving’s ‘World’s Largest’ Moon Pie:
This gargantuan confection, to be prepared over the weekend, is expected to weigh between 150-180 pounds. With dimensions of five feet in diameter by four inches thick, it will offer a staggering 1,400 servings. Crafting this culinary marvel will require a plethora of ingredients, including marshmallows, eggs, butter, flour, chocolate, and graham cracker crumbs.
