Violent Protests Erupt in Ranchi: BJP Leaders’ Remarks Spark Controversy

In response to controversial remarks by now-ousted BJP leaders, violent protests erupted in parts of Ranchi, prompting the imposition of a curfew under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The chaos saw vehicles set ablaze, rampant vandalism, and instances of stone-pelting resulting in injuries, including to some law enforcement officers.

The unrest spread beyond Ranchi, igniting massive protests across the nation, with notable demonstrations in Delhi, Ranchi, and various cities in Uttar Pradesh. In an effort to quell the turmoil, prohibitory orders were enforced from Sujata Chowk to Firayalal Chowk, with gatherings of five or more individuals banned in the specified area.

Tensions soared as police resorted to baton charges and firing warning shots to disperse the agitated crowds. The flashpoint occurred post-Friday prayers near the Daily Market, coinciding with a day-long shutdown by local traders protesting the inflammatory remarks.

Anish Gupta, deputy inspector general of police, assured reporters that despite the tense situation, security measures were in place, with senior officials overseeing operations. However, the protests persisted throughout the day, fueled by demands for the immediate arrest of the implicated BJP leaders.

The unrest reverberated nationwide, with reports of demonstrations and chanting emerging from various states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and beyond. The controversy also attracted international attention, prompting reactions from countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iran.

Amid escalating tensions, the BJP took disciplinary action, suspending Sharma and expelling Delhi media head Naveen Jindal, emphasizing its commitment to respecting all religions in the face of mounting criticism both domestically and abroad.
