Adopting a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle not only promotes personal health but also contributes positively to the well-being of our planet.

Chances are, you know someone who follows a vegan or vegetarian diet. Perhaps it’s the child who opts out of hot dogs at birthday celebrations, aware that they often contain meat from cows or pigs.

But what exactly distinguishes a vegan from a vegetarian? A vegetarian refrains from consuming meat, including beef and seafood, whereas a vegan abstains from all animal-derived foods, such as eggs, cheese, and milk. Additionally, both groups may choose not to use products made from animal skins, like fur, leather, or wool.

A Singular “Veggie” in the Household

It’s increasingly common for children to embrace vegetarian or vegan diets, even when their families do not.

Take Annie Kay from Ontario, Canada, for instance. After learning about the origins of meat through animal rights documentaries, she found herself unable to reconcile her conscience with consuming it any longer.

“I just couldn’t justify eating animals. Their lives are as precious as ours; it feels unjust to consume them,” explained the 13-year-old.

Having adopted a vegetarian lifestyle for over a year now, Annie has motivated several of her peers to reconsider their meat consumption. However, she stands as the sole “veggie” within her household.

“My parents are meat-eaters,” she shared. “Seeing them include animals in their meals is quite unsettling for me.”

Nevertheless, Annie’s parents respect her choice and accommodate her dietary preferences.

A Wise Choice for Well-being

Many medical professionals advocate for plant-based diets, emphasizing their benefits in maintaining good health and reducing the risk of various illnesses.

Renowned institutions like the Mayo Clinic highlight the advantages of vegetarian diets in lowering the likelihood of heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. However, ensuring an adequate intake of protein, calcium, and vitamins like D and B12 may require careful meal planning, especially for growing children. Both you and your parents should seek guidance from a healthcare provider.

Moreover, eschewing meat and dairy products also contributes to environmental well-being. A vegan diet plays a role in combatting climate change by mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, particularly methane from livestock. Additionally, it helps minimize water pollution from pesticides used in animal feed production and reduces deforestation for grazing land.

Advocating for Change

Max Murphy, raised vegan since birth, has emerged as a passionate animal rights activist at the age of eight. Hailing from Ontario, Max has participated in protests against the fur industry and marine captivity and volunteered at animal rescue centers globally. Locally, he aids his mother in fostering dogs rescued from various countries.

Max dedicates his time to caring for the foster dogs, tending to their needs, and providing companionship.

“Dogs, cows, pigs, cats—they’re all sentient beings,” he asserted. “Sure, dogs may seem more familiar, but fundamentally, they’re all equal.”

Max is equally committed to addressing environmental concerns.

“The impact of factory farming and fossil fuel usage is devastating,” he warned. “Without significant changes, our planet’s future is bleak.”

  1. Join the Meatless Mondays movement, an initiative promoting a meat-free day each week for health and environmental benefits. Experiment with vegan protein sources like beans, chickpeas, lentils, nuts, quinoa, and tofu.
